The Michigan Abilities Center Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (MAC PMR) provides high quality, personalized, compassionate and timely medical care for individuals with physical and cognitive impairments in a warm and friendly environment.  Following over 27 years of dedicated service at Wayne State University, in 2017 Dr. Steven Hinderer established MAC PMR to allow him to best serve his clients with the comprehensive care and time that is needed to address the complexity of their issues. 

Steven R. Hinderer, M.D. Biosketch

Specialist in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Electrodiagnostic Medicine

Dr. Hinderer attended the University of Michigan Ann Arbor from 1974-1978 graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Certificate in Physical Therapy.  He worked as a staff physical therapist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Allen Park, MI for one year then returned to the University of Michigan to attend medical school from 1979-1983.  After graduation from medical school Dr. Hinderer completed residency training in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle in 1986.   He pursued a research fellowship at UW following his residency, leading to a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Medicine. He has been Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Electrodiagnostic Medicine since 1987.  Dr. Hinderer has considerable expertise in biomechanics; especially with regard to orthotic and prosthetic management. He is known nationally for his significant contributions and advancing the care of people who have sustained catastrophic injuries.

Dr. Hinderer has held faculty positions at the University of Washington Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Michigan Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR) at the Wayne State University (WSU) School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He has participated at federally funded model systems of care for spinal cord injury (SCI) at all three of these academic training centers and has been funded by NIH for spinal cord injury research. He has multiple peer-reviewed publications. He served as Interim Chairman of the WSU Department of PMR from 2000-2004 and as Residency Program Director from 2009-2017.  He served as the Medical Director for Walk the Line to SCI Recovery (WTL) in Southfield, Michigan from 2007-2017. Dr. Hinderer has played an essential role establishing innovative treatment for SCI and traumatic brain injury recovery in southeast Michigan at WSU and WTL for over 15 years. He is on the medical staff of Beaumont Dearborn, Taylor, Wayne and Trenton Hospitals as well as Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. He is the current Vice Chief of the PMR Service at Beaumont Taylor Hospital.

Following over 27 years of dedicated service at WSU, in 2017 Dr. Hinderer established MAC PMR to allow him to best serve his clients with the comprehensive care and time that is needed to address the complexity of their issues.  Dr. Hinderer continues to be on faculty at WSU in the Department of PMR, teaching residents and covering inpatients at Beaumont Taylor Hospital.

Dr. Hinderer has been active in several rehabilitation related professional associations for over 30 years, and has served in may leadership positions, including President of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Michigan Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  Other professional associations include: American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Association of Academic Physiatrists, American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Development Medicine, American Medical Association, and the American Physical Therapy Association.  

Dr. Hinderer also serves people with disabilities by volunteering for rehabilitation organizations and is a co-founder and volunteer for the Michigan Abilities Center Equine Assisted Therapy and Heritage Hill Haven; a non-profit whose mission is to foster a healing, supportive, and sustainable environment for therapeutic, learning, and wellness programs that improve the quality of life, health, and wellbeing of individuals of all ages and abilities by utilizing the benefits of farm life and animal assisted therapy to achieve meaningful outcomes.   He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
